ONE MAN IN HIS TIME PLAYS MANY PARTS

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW

This production of What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton was staged at the Lyttelton Theatre at the Royal National.  The Lyttelton is one of three theatres at the South Bank site, the others being the Olivier (the largest) and the Cottlesloe (the smallest).

David Tennant has trod the boards at the Cottlesloe in The Pillowman, as well as dazzling audiences with his brilliance in the National's annual Theatre Quiz twice!

The production opened February 24, 1995 in London.  Matinees were at 2:15 pm and evening performances were at 7:30 pm with a running time of 2 hours with a 20 minute interval.

The production was directed by Phyllida Lloyd.

The play then traveled to the Bath Theatre Royal from April 25th - 29th. The performanmces then moved on to the Blackpool Grand Theatre from May 2nd - 6th, the Norwich Theatre Royal, from May 9th - 13th and finally the Nottingham Theatre Royal, May 16th - 20th.

This production also marked the first time David Tennant appeared with fellow Scot, Richard Wilson, starting a long history of collaboration.

They co-starred in the little-known TV series Duck Patrol in 1998 and then David guest-starred in the even lesser-known Richard Wilson series High Stakes in 2001.

In fact High Stakes did so well that some of the episodes were never broadcast, but you can see them on DVD, including the one David was in called The Magic Word.

In 2012 they collaborated once again on Richard's Radio 4 series Believe It!.
