STRATFORD: AS YOU LIKE IT
The Stratford production of As You Like It, at the Royal Shakespeake Theatre, ran from April 18, 1996 - October 5, 1996, with the press night on April 25th.
The production then moved to the Barbican for it's London run.
The play was directed by Steven Pimlott and recieved rave reviews.
A bit of trivia, for such an acclaimed production the actors themselves seem cursed, during the run Victoria Hamilton (Phebe) broke her foot, Joseph Fiennes (Silvius) dislocated his shoulder and David Tennant (Touchstone) crippled his ankle.
David relates his experiance in the production in an essay in the book Players of Shakespeare 4: Further Essays in Shakespearean Performance by Players with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He was actually in the middle of rehearsal for The Glass Menagerie at the Dundee Rep when he was asked to fly to London to audition, and even then he was not expecting to audition for Touchstone!
Here are to small excerpts from his essay:

Reviews
The Daily Mail - Jack Tinker - April 26, 1996:
"David Tennant's archly Scottish Touchstone is a sprightly comic reinvention of this often tiresome fool."
The Herald - Carole Woddis - May 29, 1996:
"One performance stands out like a beacon in Steve Pimlott's surprisingly dark-toned production . . .comparative newcomer David Tennant (late of 7:84 and Royal Lyceum) brings a delightful north of the border elan to the often funny but seldom so excitable court jester, Touchstone. In an inspired performance, Tennant with his flailing hands and slightly affected intonations, brings light and air to an original if sometimes mis-shapen production."
